Midrand kids’ carnival spreads joy among orphaned children

During the Easter holidays, orphaned children felt the warmth of having a family, and a fun-filled carnival with games, laughter and celebration.

A local foundation brought joy and laughter to dozens of orphaned children when it hosted a kids’ carnival at Dreamhill International School during the Easter holidays.

Connect to Feed Foundation, a non-profit organisation based in Midrand, welcomed around 77 children from local homes, including the Bramley Children’s Home, Bana ba Kgotso Bible School and Creche. The children enjoyed food, games, music, dance, water slides and jumping castles throughout the day.

The idea for the carnival grew out of the foundation’s annual back-to-school project. Foundation member Jharna Dixit explained that while the project provided children with clothes and school supplies, the team noticed that they rarely got the chance to simply have fun.

The carnival was made possible through the generosity of several sponsors. Dreamhill International School provided the venue, BAPS Charities South Africa supplied 100 pizzas, and Dr Shivam Bhikha served as the event medical consultant (EMC) for the day, ensuring the children were safe throughout the festivities.

EMC intermediate life support practitioner Thokozani Ndlovu said it was a privilege to be part of such a meaningful event.

“To witness children coming from homes, children who don’t really have families, being celebrated and given their right to have fun as children is heartwarming,” he said.

Lisa Das Neves, house mom at the Bramley Children’s Home, said the children had been counting down the days to the event.

“The kids appreciate being here, they love it, and they were so excited they couldn’t even wait for this day to come.

A lot of these kids don’t get to see their families and experience so much fun. So this means so much to them,” she said, adding her thanks to Connect to Feed and Dreamhill School for making it happen.

Connect to Feed Foundation focuses primarily on providing food parcels, clothing and school uniforms to disadvantaged communities in Ivory Park and Tembisa.

The carnival marked a heartfelt extension of that mission, giving the children a day filled with warmth, colour and celebration as they headed into the Easter break.
