Police appeal to residents not to keep deceased’s firearm

IVORY PARK - When a person dies, what happens to their firearm? It seems there is a tendency to keep the firearm in Ivory Park.

Alexandra cluster commander is appealing to community members not to keep firearms that belong to deceased family members without reporting them to the police station in their area.Ivory Park Police Station’s warrant officer, Neldah Sekgobela said, “Cluster commander Major General Vincent Leshabane said relatives must report firearms at police stations in order to get advice on what can be done with the firearms.”

In such cases police advise relatives of the deceased to:

  •  Get a letter of authority from the magistrates’ court, a form known as J170 will be issued to the executor of the estate.
  •  Police will complete the form and accompany the executor, along with the gun, to a gunsmith
  •  The gunsmith will give the relative or executor the option to apply for a firearm licence and go for training, sell the firearm or surrender it to police. In some cases police can confiscate the firearm.
