Fast reaction prevents carjam

MIDRAND - The chairperson of the Midrand Community Policing Forum told Midrand Reporter that he almost fell victim to something he often warns residents about.

Billy Rudlin said he parked his vehicle at Carlswald a few days ago and went on his errands. He returned to his car to leave purchases so he could continue shopping. “I got out of the car, pressed the remote to lock, but when I manually checked that the doors were locked, my car door opened. I repeated pressing the remote, checking manual locking and motions many times and car still did not lock.”

“I then spoke to a security guard at the centre as I suspected car-jammers were watching me and jamming my car. After speaking to the guard, I tried locking my car again and it locked. I think the culprits realised I knew what they were up to.”

Rudlin said he has given the community a lot of advise to be on the look out for car-jamming and he also almost fell victim to it. “I escaped by manually checking that my car was locked, that is important,” he said.

He warned car owners should be vigilant when parking their cars, especially in shopping centres as criminals lurk in those areas.

Midrand Police spokesperson Constable Matome Tlamela said Rudlin had reported the matter to the police. “We can not stress enough the importance of checking car doors are locked and windows closed before you walk away. If you suspect foul play, do not leave your car unattended.”
