Drugs and crime concerns raised

NOORDWYK - Ward 92 residents are concerned about levels of crime in all areas under the ward, and alleged drug activity at Noordwyk shopping centre and at Noordwyk Park.

This emerged during the ward’s public meeting with councillor Leepile Motsumi, residents and the ward committee. Some residents in Noordwyk have started a Whatsapp group to alert each other of crime in the area and suspected criminal activities.

Other issues raised include the grass and trees that are not being cut or trimmed, power outages, potholes in Old Pretoria and Olifantsfontein roads, and other roads which are still in a bad state, especially Liebenberg Road, poor or no street lighting, zoning issues in Glen Austin, muggings and late night drinking and noise in Noordwyk.

Motsumi told residents that he was aware of the allegations that there are drugs being sold at Noordwyk and residents no longer feel safe. A resident asked the councillor to ask Midrand police to intervene as they live near a sangoma who continuously holds rituals and hangs dead animals over his wall.

“I will speak to Midrand police and the sector forum, as I have done in the past, to see what crime interventions can be affected,” he replied.

Motsumi said City Parks was putting together a report on Noordwyk Park, and the findings would be made available to residents once the report had been completed.

The councillor introduced the ward committee to the residents and said the committee was available to facilitate issues which residents raise on a daily basis. Contact details of the service delivery inspector Innocent Sibisi, and ward administrator Selina Maja, were given to residents for easy communication with regard to ward-related issues and reporting them.

Motsumi said in spite of the challenge of escalating issues to municipality, the ward has, among many other achievements, managed to:

q Develop a park in Kaalfontein Ext 7

q Install streets lights in Kaalfontein Ext 4, 5, 7, 22 and 23

q Paths have been paved for cyclists on some streets in Ward 92

q Modderfontein Road is being resurfaced

q Many traffic lights were fixed.

Details: For service delivery issues contact Inspector Innocent Sibisi on 071 610 4230; or ward administrator Selina Maja on 083 564 0210.
