Fraud on the cards
MIDRAND - Hawks boss General Anwa Dramat confirmed that South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) played a role in the thwarting of a potential R3.5 billion Eskom scam.

Two Eskom employees were arrested.
Dramat was speaking at Sabric’s annual media briefing on card fraud statistics.
Kalyani Pillay, the centre’s CEO said important strides had been taken to curb some crimes related to bank cards.
Credit card fraud saw an increase of 23 percent within a year, from R366.8 million loss in 2013 to a R453.9 million loss this year. Fraud relating to debit cards also increased, however it was only by five percent.
Gauteng saw the highest increase in credit card fraud.
Sabric also released a few tips to prevent users becoming victims of card fraud.
- Keep transaction slips and check them against monthly statement to spot any suspicious transactions.
- If a card is retained and an ATM, do not leave the ATM until the bank has cancelled your card.
- Don’t let your card out of your sight when making payment, insert it to the machine yourself, where possible.
“We urge bank customers to adhere to ATM safety tips such as not accepting assistance from anybody at the ATM,” said Pillay.
