Curro Sagewood Primary hosts fiery public speaking event
Parents and teachers celebrate Curro's young learners for their bravery and confidence at the public speaking event.
Curro Sagewood Primary hosted a vibrant public speaking event under the theme Learning Beyond Limits, allowing learners to showcase their confidence, creativity, and communication skills in front of parents, teachers, and fellow learners.
The head of the English department, Priscila Stevens, explained the meaning of the theme:
“It means continue to grow and develop without fear of classroom boundaries and public speaking. It means to share your ideas and learn from others beyond textbooks and exams.”

The event celebrated the importance of self-expression and encouraged learners to step out of their comfort zones through poetry recitals and prepared speeches.
Learners from grades 1 to 3 took to the stage with expressive and engaging poetry performances that entertained the audience and highlighted their growing confidence at a young age.
Grade 4 and 5 mathematics teacher, Lameez Gopie, spoke about the importance of developing public speaking skills from a young age.

“It is a pivotal part of their schooling career to develop public speaking skills as well as gain confidence. This will enable them to make the most out of their high school and hopefully their tertiary education years.

“Having the confidence, whether you know something or not, already allows you to answer or participate instead of being passive and not making the most out of any situation.”
The performances demonstrated courage and stage presence from learners, many of whom confidently addressed a large audience for the first time.
The programme continued with learners from grades 4 to 7 captivating the audience through well-prepared speeches on a variety of meaningful and thought-provoking topics.
Their presentations reflected confidence, critical thinking, and strong public speaking abilities as they delivered their speeches with passion.

All the participating learners received certificates and special treats in recognition of their hard work, effort, and bravery.
Winners in the grades 4 to 7 categories were also acknowledged for their outstanding performances and exceptional speaking skills.
Teachers expressed pride in all the learners who participated and confidently represented their grades throughout the event.
Stevens concluded by saying that for young learners, public speaking was important to build confidence, develop critical thinking, improve communication skills and prepare for future opportunities.
