Varsity college handed over the library and a year’s worth of fundraising, an initiative of Masixhasane Literacy project, to the school. The library has 800 curriculum-related books, a 32-inch LED TV, DVD player and educational DVD’s. The library can be wheeled to any of the classsrooms at the school if the need arises and it can be locked. Speaking on the three campuses’ book drive efforts, student relations manager at the Sandton campus, Vasanthee Govender said, “Community engagement is an integral part of Varsity College, and hosting various fundraising activities to purchase the mobile library was an immensely rewarding effort on the part of Varsity college.”
She stated that the aim of the initiative is to generate a passion for reading and eradicate illiteracy in disadvantaged schools and rural communities. “The primary school has not had a proper library for many years, we saw the need for one and have since donated over 2 000 books to the school this year.”
The principal at Ema Primary School, Lydia Molelekeng said, “The library will be a legacy that will remain with the school for a long time, we are grateful to Varsity College.”
