Keep safe at home

JOBURG - A statement from the Midrand Police Station's communications office has released safe housekeeping rules.

“House keepers and gardeners are often left alone in the houses with a huge responsibility of caring for the home and other expensive contents. As such it is important to educate them,” said the Midrand police.

The following tips are for residents and all domestic workers:

  •  Be aware of your surroundings at all the times.
  • Do not open the gate or door unless it is safe to do so. You should only allow people whom the owner has authorised to have access to the home.
  • Rather call the employer to check if a person has made prior arrangements first to be on the property.
  • On arrival at work, it advisable to check that there are no strange people lurking in the bushes or hanging around near the house.
  • Helpers and children walking from school are very vulnerable, therefore a remote panic button could be helpful in this instance.
  • Helpers are advised not to talk about their employers’ property with anyone as criminals may threaten the helper and their family in order to get to the employers’ property.
  • Keep doors locked and unbarred windows closed. This is especially important when the helper is cleaning or busy with children in the house as they will not be able to hear someone coming in.
