Eskom brings project to a halt

PRESIDENT PARK - Eskom electricity supply woes are allegedly to blame for the President Park streetlights not being energised.

Ward 110 councillor Stephen Lamola said he has been in contact with City Power over the issue. “I have been asking for City Power to intervene in the matter, but they said they are still waiting for Eskom to energise the streetlights.”

He stated that he is not sure when lights will be turned on ‘…since Eskom is having a nationwide problem of power supply.’

City Power spokesperson Sydney Mphahlele confirmed that City Power is waiting for Eskom to install a supply point. He said, “Once the supply point has been installed, streetlights will be energised and maintained by City Power, as they are a project of City Power.”

In the article What a waste of money, week ending 5 January 2015, residents told Midrand Reporter that for over a year streetlights on Burger and Kruger roads in President Park have never been lit.

Contractors erected streetlight poles and some are even falling over, yet residents are still in the dark. Residents stated that tax payers’ money had been misused. This came after the City of Johannesburg revealed that developing areas in Midrand would receive R30 million worth of public lighting systems.

Eskom has not responded to any queries sent by the paper.
