Bigger bins, better environment

MIDRAND - Pikitup has started rolling out 240-litre refuse bins in several suburbs and townships across the city in a fresh move to improve refuse collection.

On 1 February the City of Johannesburg’s waste management company will be going door to door handing out new 240-litre bins to 11 000 households in Allendale, Ebony Park and Kaalfontein in Midrand.

According to Christa Venter, Pikitup’s general manager, residents of Rabie Ridge, Ivory Park and Klipfontein will receive theirs in the second phase. The 240-litre bins replace the 85-litre and plastic bags, which are being phased out from the Midrand areas. Venter said in some areas, plastic bags had become a health hazard as dogs tore them. This also caused problems for Pikitup crew members.

“We are giving the residents the 240-litre bins because there are, in many instances, a lot of backyard dwellers on their properties. We’re also giving the residents a bag every week for recycling.”

Venter appealed to residents to take good care of the new bins. “No hot ash or builders’ rubble such as bricks are allowed in the 240-litre bins. The City still encourages the separation of refuse at source to promote recycling and emphasises that the new bins will not get in the way of the separation at source initiatives.”

Residents whose areas are not yet participating in the separation at source programme are encouraged to take their recyclable waste to their garden sites until Pikitup rolls out Jozi@Work, a programme which will include some elements of the separation at source programme.

To take possession of the new bins, homeowners are required to have a copy of their municipal account and identity document.
