Home schooling is an option in Midrand

MIDRAND - Home schooling often seems like a daunting task for most parents.

However, with the average ratio of 40 learners to one teacher in most public schools, it could be the saving grace that parents need.

This according to Bronwyn Cronje of Whispering Pines, a home-based Christian education centre in Glen Austin.

They have 20 pupils who are on the programme, some of whom were considered to be slow learners or problematic children.

“We don’t have failures here,” said Cronje.

Their pupils choose a subject stream that is suited to their abilities and career hopes as early as Grade 10.

“We do our own career guidance here, there is no need for a pupil to do mathematics and science if they are looking to go into hospitality in varsity.”

She said it was also no use for a medical student aspirant trying to get into medical school to have had art as a subject.

Cronje said there was no need for parents to be worried about not being able to teach their children at home as their course material is easy to understand. “Our books explain everything,” she said.

“Even then, we have an open door policy. If the parent doesn’t understand the material they are welcome to come to the school and we will gladly explain it all.”

Extra-mural activities at the school include a vegetable garden, giving care to the school’s pets, enjoying leisure time in the homely garden and putting on shows and sketches for parents and other learners.

Cronje works closely with Midrand Learner Transport Association and is therefore able to transport her pupils to and from home safely. “We also specialise in remedial teaching, and occupational therapy is provided when there is a need,” said Cronje.
