“We would like to thank Ward 112 councillor Candice James and her team for having the Midrand SPCA added to the grid,” said Brenda Lucas, the SPCA’s chairperson.
Lucas said she can’t remember a time when the grass outside the associations’ Midrand base was ever cut. “The grass area outside our premises has always been left to grow wild and this poses a danger for potential hijackings as you cannot see through the grass,” said Lucas.
Foreseeing the threat, the association approached James’ office for assistance. “She immediately responded by letting us know that they would add us to the grid.”
The gesture by the council was a welcome one, as the association stated that they do not have the funding or the resources to maintain the area. “With the help of Ward 112, we will now be more visible from the road and it will be much safer for our staff and the public.”
James said that even though the Midrand SPCA falls out of her ward, she is always impressed with the staff and the volunteers that continue to help the SPCA.
“Their dedication and the support from residents [encourages me to] also to try help where I can. I just wish I could do more,” she said.
The issue of the long grass around the centre was reported to James in the week starting on 26 January, however she said she will keep residents abreast of the developments regarding the issue when City Parks give her specific dates.
