The VEC is run by Nicola Arend and a team of trained volunteers, and is based at the Midrand Police Station. The main objectives of the VEC is to assist victims of crime to find hope, strength and resilience in the face of grief and trauma, as well as provide an opportunity of accessing services and resources available to them.
Volunteers are essential to the support offered to victims of crime, and the Midrand VEC is extending an invitation to the community to become involved.
“We require mature individuals with strong interpersonal skills, who are empathic, non-judgmental and trustworthy. It is necessary to have good communication skills in English, as well as any other South African language,” said Constable Nanti Belebesi, social crime prevention officer at the Midrand Police station. “We need people who have been practising psychology and counselling for a few years and have degrees in the field,” she said.
Counsellors are on duty each day and can be reached on 076 4452 451 to make an appointment. The services are free, confidential, and are available to everyone.
Intensive training is presented, coupled with supervision and support of counsellors in the VEC.
