Expectant moms get all the information they need

MIDRAND - Expectant moms had an informative session at a pregnancy workshop at Life Carstenhof Clinic in Midrand.

Nursing manager Sibongile Mcunu told expectant moms that each pregnancy was unique. She said, “Even if this is your second pregnancy, the experiences may differ from the first. It does not mean that the new changes are complications.”

Dietitian Margaret Lehobye talked about the importance of eating well during and after pregnancy, and avoiding strenuous exercise. She emphasised, “After giving birth, women often feel the pressure to lose weight instantly. A crash diet and strenuous exercise will affect breastfeeding. Strenuous exercise produces lactic acid, which makes milk bitter and the baby rejects the breast.”

Paediatrician Dr Daina Ruredzo talked about what new mothers could expect after the baby was born. “At times mothers will be too tired from the labour to instantly bond with the baby.”

The hospital also offers antenatal classes for parents-to-be who need more guidance in what to expect during pregnancy, the birth and life back home with the baby.
