Shopping centre disabled access questioned

MIDRAND - A partially blind and disabled resident who did not want to be named told Midrand Reporter that he struggles to get around Midway Mews shopping centre.

He said, “I shop at Midway Mews Centre and I struggle every time I am there. The elevator has not been serviced of late, and when I decide to leave my wheelchair and use a walking stick, the floors are slippery.” He added that the wheelchair ramps were not too bad.

The resident said he tried to contact management of the centre but to no avail.

Midrand Reporter was more successful and managed to get comment from Greer Hogarth of the centre. Hogarth said maintenance at Midway Mews was an ongoing project with issues being dealt with as and when they arose. Nothing was mentioned about slippery floors but Hogarth said, “There are also a number of wheelchair friendly ramps available for our patrons to make use of for their convenience. A new lift is planned for installation in 2015.

“The centre sincerely apologises for any inconvenience experienced whilst visiting Midway Mews. We take the well-being of our shoppers very seriously, and appreciate their support and patience at the centre.”
