On 19 February, the sector’s ruling organ in aiding police in combating crime was chosen. Most of the members were unanimously elected, and the whole executive was re-elected on the night.
The Isasango Conference Centre played host to the meeting which started at 7pm and ended well after 10pm.
The 12-member committee will be a strategic partner with the Midrand Police Station on a number of issues discussed on the night, including how to target crime within the sector. The police’s report claimed that there were 42 crimes committed within the Waterfall East, Glen Austin Ext 3, AH and AH1, Grand Central, President Park, Randjiesfontein and Juskei View areas in the month of January. A large number of those crimes were said to be robberies and house burglaries.
Tuesdays were the most problematic days, as seven of the crimes were committed on the day. The most affected time was between 12pm and 4pm, with nine crimes.
Colonel Steven Moodley of the Midrand police said that although sector crime forums were not budgeted for in the police station’s finances, they were vital in aiding the police to combat crime. “We are going to establish neighbourhood watches that are to function under the supervision of the sector crime forum commander [who is a police officer].”
