The academy hosts awards for schools every year in August. The school’s drama teacher Brian Jokozela said, “Our drama group presented an English mini play titled At last at Bryanston Primary School last year and qualified with a Diploma certificate which is awarded for an outstanding performance.”
The play conveys a strong message on themes such as racial prejudice, freedom, human rights and togetherness during the apartheid regime. “Putting an untrained actor on stage is like throwing a child who can’t swim in a pool full of water, that’s why we also run Saturday classes that focus on voice training, stage management and technical acting,” he said.
Intermediate phase pupils Lebogang Baqwa, Keyur Badree, Jade Brown, Lesego Miyen and Mbhalenhle Moche act in the play At last. It will be performed at the National Young Performers Awards at Roodepoort Theatre in March.
School drama captain Lesego Miyen said he is not nervous about the upcoming performances. Miyen said, “It’s not the first time that I am performing at professional theatre level. We also staged a show at the South African State Theatre during the Tswane Youth Arts Festival 2013.”
