The incident occurred at about 10pm on the corner of Dale Road and Pretorius Street when the suspect and his accomplice allegedly followed the 30-year-old woman into her gate.
The woman noticed them and manoeuvred her vehicle to block their exit. One of the men allegedly approached her vehicle and opened her door and managed to take the keys out of the ignition. The victim said he then pulled her out of the car but she put up a struggle. During the scuffle his accomplice allegedly took her cellphone.
While she was struggling with the man, the cellphone snatcher somehow managed to squeeze his car out of the gate and drove away.
According to police, the victim said the other alleged hijacker then pulled out a firearm and pointed it at her because she was screaming. Her screams, however, woke her neighbours who came out to help and managed to apprehend the suspect and call the police.
Constable Matome Tlamela, head of communications for Midrand police said, “He was not tied up when the police arrived at the scene.
“The gun was real, we are unsure of the suspect’s reasons for not firing it.”
She commended the community members who managed to apprehend the man in spite of him being armed.
“The arrested suspect is facing charges of armed robbery and hijacking. The police are busy with investigations to bring the other suspect to book,” she said.
