Groenvoer Mother’s Day market a blast
MIDRAND - Community support is the secret behind Groenvoer Country Market's 11 years of success, said Jennifer Sarkis, their marketing manager.
“Our country market has been going for 11 years and we would like to thank all our loyal customers, market visitors and stall holders, for making it such a successful and enjoyable event.”
On 3 May, the Groenvoer shop was very busy, with early birds trying to get a head start on Mother’s Day gift shopping.
“The specials of the day were very popular. Stall holders sales were good – and we heard the fabulously exciting news that our exotic snail stall holders sold a big order to well-known executive chefs, Jeff Schueremans and Philippe Frydman,” said Sarkis after the chefs visited the market and were impressed with the quality of the snails.
Legendary comedian, Mel Miller, although a newcomer to the market, was one of the main attractions. “He showcased a wonderful new skill – intricate woodwork so fine that his pieces are future heirlooms,” she said.
“Heidi Hannig brought along her two clever inventions Bag Secur! and Pet Secur! Two products offer increased security for lady’s handbags and pets in cars,” she said, speaking of one of their long-time stall holders.
Charity stalls, reportedly, also did well on the day. New Jerusalem Children’s Home sold a variety of baked items, including tasty breads at extremely good prices. “Our charity book stalls, the Midrand SPCA and Lion’s Club did well – and that is always specially gratifying for us,” said Sarkis.
The market is a day for a family outing. Thus, entertainment is always an important factor. “Entertainment-wise, the Labrador Retriever Kennel Club did the most amazing obedience demos and field trials.”
Sarkis was especially moved by the sight of a blind labrador finding its prey by being guided by its handler’s varying whistles. “This dog took it to a whole new level by retrieving a live pigeon (in a stocking) and returning the bird completely unharmed to the handler, who then released it to demonstrate conclusively the gentleness and restraint of the dog.”
