Disabled teen gets wheels

MIDRAND - A MIDRAND company, Marais 4 Architects, donated an electric wheelchair to a disabled pupil from Hope School in Johannesburg.

Siphamandla Sechabela, suffers from a genetic disease that causes progressive weakness of the muscles. The 14-year-old boy lost the ability to walk at the age of 11 and is now permanently wheelchair bound.

Principal architect Eben Marais said, “We donated the wheelchair because, as a company, we like to develop our youth. We need to give back to the community.”

He explained that last year, the company hosted a golf day to benefit two charities. “As part of our initiative to assist very talented gymnasts in developing physically, we also support people with physical disabilities,” he said.

The school’s fundraising manager Ingrid Middleton-Vey said, “On behalf of the school, I would like to thank Marais for his continued support of the pupils at Hope School. Donations such as this one make such a difference to our pupils.”

Marais 4 Architects will host another golf day on 14 October to donate another motorised wheelchair to Hope School.
