Learning a new language is fun

MIDAND - LINGO Links is a non-profit language organisation.

The organisation is inviting Midranders to a new German and English speaking group.

“Join our magic pastime and bring a whole new dimension to your lives,” urged founder Rhona Wetzka. The aim of the organisation is to give those that have studied a language the opportunity to put the theory into practice and actually speak it.

She explained that the foreign language conversation circles consist of small groups that meet either in members’ homes or coffee-shops to socialise in different languages. Among some of the popular languages are Italian, French, Greek and Chinese. There are also English conversation groups which help newcomers to improve their English and adapt to their new lives.

Each group is unique and chooses its own name, way of operating, meeting time and place. Some are bilingual where the participants speak and help to speak each other’s languages such as Spanish/English or English/Afrikaans.

Mother tongue speakers – mostly newcomers to SA or long-time immigrants – form the backbone of the conversation circles.

“The only requirement is a basic working knowledge of the foreign language,” said Wetzka. “We don’t teach. We just offer the opportunity to practise the language and of course help where necessary.”
