Park gets a facelift in Ivory Park

IVORY PARK - Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo officially unveiled a R4-million upgraded Ivory Park Regional Park in Ward 79 in Midrand.

Besides addressing maintenance issues, the park was given a facelift. Members of the Mayoral Committee, City of Joburg officials, local role players and residents attended the event at the revamped park which now has picnic and braai facilities, park benches, bins, a children’s play area and exercise equipment.

Residents and children who were at the event and live near it said they are happy with the work done as previously the park was treated as a dumping ground.

Residents Tebogo Phiri and Mike Mathe said, “The place was terrible before, the park was like a dumping ground, but now we will come here to gym and play soccer.”

Ward 79 councillor Petros Zitha said residents must view the park as their own. “The park is an extension of your homes, take care of it, do not allow schoolchildren to break tree branches and deliberately break the play equipment put here.”

MMC for Community Development, councillor Chris Vondo, said the park is an exciting venture for the community.

“The park brings with it a positive lifestyle as it will encourage healthy living through exercise and a clean place for children to play.”

City Parks and Zoo managing director, Bulumko Nelana, thanked the community for their excitement over the park and thanked City Parks staff and members of the mayoral committee for seeing the project through to the end.

Schoolchildren sang and read poems about parks at the launch.
