The ICT Achievers Awards ceremony is set to take place at the Vodacom World Dome on 2 October at 6.30pm for the first time since 2008.
Deputy minister of the department, Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize said they took the action after realising the important role that ICT plays in South Africa’s economy.
“I hope the role community colleges play is also considered in the awarding process. ICT skills are not highly rated in our rural communities, [we hope to change this perception],” said Mkhize.
She also mentioned the importance of rural and township-based entities entering and nominating those making a difference within the sector.
The awards are set to address issues facing previously disadvantaged groups within the ICT sector. The award categories include entrepreneurship and SMME development, community development, future leader and women in ICT.
“Not only does ICT inject a much-needed R95 billion into the local economy annually, but the fact that the sector is a very visible one means it has the capacity to change perceptions and advance South Africa’s transformation goals,” Mkhize said.
Her sentiments were echoed by forum board member, Themba Kinana, “Communication brings us all closer and nothing enables more communication more often than ICT.”
Kinana also said Midrand is a direct beneficiary of the power of ICT to change economic prospects for the better. “From one pioneering and homegrown cellular company setting up shop here in the mid 90s, we now only have to drive down the nearby highway to witness a plethora of corporate signs – the majority of which seem to advertising technology companies.”
Among other things, judges are to consider the nominee’s contribution, benefit and positive impact on society. “These awards are a golden opportunity to motivate everyone in the wider ICT sector to achieve their most outstanding and innovative work,” said Lucky Masilela, chairman of SACF.
