Children have exciting ride in fire engine

MIDRAND - The Midrand Emergency Services in Halfway Gardens hosts schools as part of their social responsibility programme.

Constance Masilela of emergency services said children gained a lot from the experience.

“They learn quite a lot from the experience,” she said.

“We also have the Metro police making a regular appearance, and they teach the children about road safety.”

The school trip is not all about education as the children get to ride in a fire truck. “It is always exciting for them,” said Masilela.

“Some of the firefighters will put on their gear in front of the children to show them how heavy it is.”

The children are also taught the good old trick of how to ‘stop, drop and roll’ to put out a fire on one’s clothes.

“Most of the kids really do enjoy their time here, we would like more schools to book,” said Masilela.

“The more children who are aware of what to do in the face of danger, the better.”

Sashni Rubsiawom, a Grade R teacher at Bentley Preparatory School brought her pupils to one of the presentations at the fire station and she raved about it. “The trip was excellent, it was very well conducted,” said Rubsiawom.

“It made quite a big difference to their [pupils] learning experience, even the posters and artworks that they now produce reveal a lot about what they’ve learned.”
