Beaulieu College leaders elected

BEAULIEU - Beaulieu College pupils recently had a taste of a democratic electoral system when the pupils and staff, in a collaborative effort, elected their heads of school for next year.

“The Grade 11 pupils were exposed to a few leadership workshops and camps during the course of the year, allowing them to gain confidence and to get to know themselves better,” said Babalwa Manyela, admissions administrator of the school.

“Our heads of school are confident young people who want the best for the school and will be true, servant leaders.”

She firmly believed that the election was a mature decision made by the pupils. “In schools, it is no longer the autocratic and loudest leader who is the best leader, but rather those who are in tune with those they lead, versatile in their leadership style, innovative, visionary and able to motivate others.”

She also said that even though some pupils were not elected, she believed leadership was an important experience as every person is required to be a leader at some stage of their life.

“For this reason, gaining experience in leading is important. This means that every senior student needs exposure to leadership opportunities within the school in order to grow their leadership potential and ability,” said Manyela.

“We look for leaders with a natural authority who are authentic, inspire others, get the best out of other people and are good role models.”

As well as enjoying their tenure, Manyela hoped the new leadership will inspire other pupils. “If they are having fun, it means that they are in a comfortable position and fulfilling their goals.”
