“Effective service delivery and well-planned infrastructure development is essential to keep this economic pillar going,” City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor, councillor Parks Tau said referring to the region.
“At our regular public sessions with the community, we listen carefully to the issues they raise and then do our best to implement [them], concentrating on basic issues like roads, stormwater [drains] and streetlights, among others.”
Some of the City Power projects included the installation of streetlights in Ward 92 along 15th, 16th and Pharmaceutical roads while 86 streetlights were installed in Sunninghill.
Johannesburg Roads Agency had resurfaced Harry Galaun Road in Vorna Valley, and R41-million had been allocated to road reconstruction projects in the region to improve the general state of roads in highly populated areas, and gravel roads in agricultural areas.
Another project tackled by the roads agency included the rehabilitation of a bridge at Main Street, Riverbend in Ward 96, while faded road markings were repainted in the Lonehill, Farmall, Witkoppen, Witpoort and Halfway House areas. Roads in Diepsloot Ext 7 and 9 have been upgraded, including Penduka, Boswa, Tjhesa, Joy, Livhuwani and Baleka streets.
In Midrand, the Le Roux Avenue bridge was completed a year ago and the roads agency was continuing work on the R10-million three-year maintenance and rehabilitation of the Le Roux Avenue widening in Ward 112.
Some of the other approved projects include:
- Improvement of the general state of roads in Diepsloot’s wards 77 and 95 (R6-million)
- Road reconstruction in Ivory Park (R15-million)
- Conversion of open stormwater channels into underground systems in Ivory Park (R10-million)
- Upgrading of gravel roads and stormwater drainage systems in Kaalfontein (R3-million)
- Pedestrian bridges planning in Ivory Park and Diepsloot (R1-million each)
- Gravel roads reconstruction programme in agricultural holdings (R5-million)
