Sagewood pupils awarded

MIDRAND - Sagewood Primary School pupils recently made their school proud by taking silver medals in the Computer Aided Maths Instruction (CAMI) Turning the Tables competition.

Grade 6 pupil, Louyi Lou, Ajay Krishnamurti, who is in Grade 7 and Hlulani Mushwana, who is in Grade 4, all clinched silver at the 2015 competition which took place on 31 October. Another pupil from the school also did well. Neo Tladi placed sixth in the Grade 5 category.

Despite having had the CAMI Maths programme for only two months and having entered only in the Grade 4 to Grade 7 categories, the three silver medals placed the Noordwyk-based school in third position overall.

The objective of the competition is to encourage pupils to improve their core mathematics skills. CAMI enables pupils to practise a large number of sums in a short space of time.

“Since January, we have conducted preliminary intra-school competitions at private and public primary schools around Gauteng with the objective of encouraging pupils to practise their core skills in preparation for the Inter-School Competition,” said Sharon Marsay, CEO of The Foundation for Excellent Learning, the official distributor for CAMI.

“Prizes were awarded for each grade based on the individual’s Performance Index (PI). The PI is a combination of speed and accuracy, the score being the number of correct sums completed per minute.”

Other participants included Midstream Ridge pupil, Taysha Hurrienarain, who won the bronze medal in the Grade 4 category. Top performer of the day was Raheen Kirsten, Grade 3 pupils at Robertsham Primary, who achieved an amazing PI score of 102.9. This means that in just six minutes 40 seconds, he completed 686 correct sums.

Robertsham Primary, as the 2014 winners, hosted the event at which 16 schools from around Gauteng vied for the top places. Robertsham Primary retained the trophy for 2015 by winning all nine gold medals.

“It is crucial that at an early age pupils realise that maths is an extremely important subject,” said Marsay.

“Without a strong foundation, pupils will find it difficult to achieve good marks for FET mathematics for matric which is a ‘gateway’ subject to most degrees and careers.”
