The launch was attended by the school’s choir, sponsors, neighbouring school principals, Gauteng Department of Education officials, parents and school staff.
Principal Silas Pillay said the school, which was once situated where Gallagher Estates now stands, has grown over the years in leaps and bounds. He said, “The launch of the website and school flag is an exciting venture for the school. We are proud also of the children. High schools in the area tell us that pupils from Halfway House Primary are a cut above the rest in how they carry themselves and the dedication to their school work.”
He explained that the school flag was designed by Dr Fred Brownell, designer of the current SA flag as well as the Namibian flag. Pillay thanked the teachers who continued to dedicate their time to pupils of the school. “As a school, we believe that there should not be a difference in the quality of education between private and public schools,” said Pillay.
The school’s language teacher, Pam Eager, gave a brief history of the school and said all principals and teachers who have worked at the school have been dedicated to giving the best of education to pupils.
Mnyamezeli Ndevu, director of the Johannesburg East District said a flag was every school’s pride. “Halfway House pupils can take pride in their flag and school song. It is what gives children a sense of pride in their school and education.”
The school choir kept the guests entertained throughout the event, commemorating a rich culture and heritage of 93 years of quality education delivery as the first pioneer school in Midrand.
