Water education in the midst of drought

MIDRAND - In the midst of the current drought situation in South Africa, Randwater's Waterwise Education team visited Space Age Independent School and educated the pupils about the importance of preserving water and using it in an environmentally-friendly way.

Magdeline Motsumi, Ntsiki Qhaba and Happy Mkhabela of Randwater said the utility conducted roadshows for schools throughout the year, as practising responsible water usage from an early age was important.

“As a country, we do not have enough water,” said Qhaba. “It is therefore important that young ones practise good habits so they become responsible adults.”

Motsumi said the pupils were taught the ‘basics’ such as switching off a tap, fixing a leaking tap, and not watering their gardens during the day. “This allows the plants to absorb the water before it is evaporated,” added Qhaba. “Through song and dance, they were shown that it is all our responsibilities to conserve water.”

Kaira Hopkins, a teacher of the school, said they were grateful for the visit. “The children learned a lot and they were excited by the water bottles and cassettes [received] that contain educational material on how to save water,” he said.

Hopkins said their school would be adding a senior phase next year which will include grades 10 and 11. “We are very proud of this growing school of ours and we look forward to gaining more partners similar to Randwater.”
