According to the school’s governing body (SGB) chairperson and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) member, Emma Motseo, Ward 92’s EFF members assembled at the school to give it a makeover. “Although the party is known for being a radical movement, we are glad that they put that aside for the sake of their kids who are in this school,” said Motseo.
She said many of the people who came on the day had children in the school and they believed that a beautiful school would inspire learning and boost the children’s confidence levels.
“As soon as they walk in on Monday morning and they see that someone else cares about their school other than them, then they will also care a bit more,” said Motseo.
She said they believe in the mantra that charity begins at home. “People need to start caring for the schools in their communities. Guard against vandalism. These schools are grooming future leaders,” she said.
Nceba Kolisi, who is the secretary in the SGB and an ANC member, said despite one’s political affiliation, it was important to play a role in the local school’s well-being. “This particular school is facing a decaying problem of broken palisades, gardening and overcrowded classrooms.”
Kolisi said they were looking to raise funds in order to target those challenges.
Motseo said some of the issues could easily be solved by the community. She called on parents who have children in the school to offer their needed services. “Nobody owns this school, everyone is welcome to come and offer to cut the grass and fix what they can.”
