Ivory Park pupils receive bursaries from Department of Public Works

MIDRAND - The Department of Public Works recently awarded two bursaries to deserving pupils from JB Matabane Secondary School in Ivory Park, among other schools, at a bursary awards ceremony in Pretoria attended by the Minister of Public Works, Thulas Nxesi.

In total, 40 bursaries were awarded to deserving pupils of last year’s matric class from schools across seven provinces which participated in the Department of Works’ schools programme.

The programme aims to nurture and develop scarce skills such as quantity surveying, civil engineering and architecture, as part of the department’s Build Programme.

Midrand beneficiaries, Zimkhitha Mhlakaza and Austin Mikhari, who will study at the University of Johannesburg, received a bursary of R130 000 each to pursue full-time studies in any of the degrees associated with scarce skills. The bursary covers tuition, accommodation, meals, textbooks and a monthly allowance.

Nxesi’s spokesperson, Sabelo Mali, said the bursary is for schoolchildren from disadvantaged communities which are well managed and where pupils are performing well.

JB Matabane Secondary School principal, Mamoyahabo Sekamela said, “The school is proud of the two young people who now have a chance at a brighter future.”

Vuyolethu Sibiya, a motivational speaker from Kuzondlula Motivational Tour said the company was involved in finding deserving pupils and it is a good opportunity for the pupils.
