A heartfelt goodbye to police officer

MIDRAND – A sad farewell to one of Midrand's longest serving police officer.

After 35 years of service at Midrand Police Station, Warrant Officer Thomas Soza Mkhari announced his retirement from the police force.

When asked about his many years of service, Mkhari said that his highlights were serving the community and getting to know many people along the way.

“I have worked in most of the departments, but spent most of my time in fleet management. I have also enjoyed training the person who will take over from me.”

Speaking about crime in Midrand over the years, he said, “I have noticed a big change in crime patterns; the more development there is, the higher the crime. Hijackings, armed robberies and drugs are one of the biggest problems in Midrand.”

Mkhari is looking forward to his retirement. “I have passed on all the knowledge and skills to some of my colleagues over the years and I am happy leaving the police service at this point; I have given it my all.”

Captain Lionel Chetty of Midrand Police Station said, “We are going to miss him. I had the opportunity to work with him for a year-and-a-half. I have seen him working hard. He comes as early as 6am daily and monitors our vehicles. He is disciplined and respectable and knew protocol. If I asked him to do something, there was no need to remind him again to do it.”
