Khokho’s Treasure now on stage at the National Children’s Theatre

PARKTOWN – Khokho's Treasures on stage at the National Children's Theatre until 3 September.

The new updated version of the musical Khokho’s Treasure will play its fourth season at the National Children’s Theatre (NCT) in Parktown until 3 September.

The play begins with their beloved Khokho dying and his great grandchildren and the children of the village learning that they have inherited an old suitcase. The children discover that the suitcase holds a treasure of Khokho’s memories which the children then use to make up their own versions of traditional stories based on the ‘treasures’.

The children sing and dance to songs that they heard their grandparents sing, including Johnny Clegg, Miriam Makeba and Mango Groove. During many of the songs they invite children in the audience on stage and at other times they invite the entire audience to stand up and join them.

The production aims to create fun, interactive adventures as well as teach lessons about values and friendship and instil a sense of pride in our unique South African culture and heritage. An enrichment guide is also available for teachers.

The play, adapted and directed by Francois Theron, recently had a successful run at the South African State Theatre. The production and tour were made possible by part of a grant of R2 million from the National Lotteries Commission.

Every year the Children’s Theatre strives to bring live, professional theatre to rural children as part of the Department of Education’s advocating the value of theatre in children’s lives, building theatre audiences of the future and opening minds to possible careers in the industry.

Khokho’s Treasure runs daily at 10.30am and 2.30pm during government school holidays. Tickets begin at R90 and can be obtained by emailing bookings@nctt.org.za or phoning Claudy or Zuki at 011 484 1584/5.
