An initiative to keep girls in school

MIDRAND – Residents lend a hand to collectively give young schoolgirls what they need most.

Midrand residents recently took part in a drive to empower schoolgirls by collecting more than 1 000 sanitary towels.

The initiative was started by a group of women from Midrand, from Midrand Mbokodo and Lwelukuthula, initiatives which empower women and girls.

At the handover of the sanitary towels, a day of fun and games at Noordwyk Secondary School was had where games including netball were played.

Speaking about the initiative, Zama Mtshali, the event organiser, said, “We are encouraged by the support showed by the people who donated sanitary towels for the girls. We have collected more than a 1 000 sanitary towels and will continue to do so, so that young girls do not have to miss school because they do not have proper towels to use.”

A representative of the Gauteng Department of Education who attended the event, Anthony Meyers said, “We heard about this initiative and decided to support it. Young girls deserve to stay in school and not have to miss school because of certain circumstances.”
