MIDRAND – The De Beers Group of Companies has launched the 2016/17 Shining Light Awards.

The De Beers Group of Companies has launched the 2016/17 Shining Light Awards at the Gallagher Convention Centre .

The awards are also known as The De Beers Young Diamond Jewellery Design Awards and will be hosted in Namibia in 2017.

Senior vice president, De Beers Sightholder Sales South Africa, Mpumi Zikalala said this year’s theme, Protecting Nature’s Beauty, is a poignant reminder of the need to take care of the world’s finite natural resources, including diamonds themselves. The competition is open to all aspiring jewellery design students regionally across South Africa, Botswana and Namibia.

Finalists will walk away, not only with awards and accolades, but will also receive valuable business development skills in the areas of jewellery design, manufacturing, sales and marketing. The Shining Light Awards challenge students to translate a brief, form an idea, and transform it into a jewellery collection, with a Forevermark diamond at its heart.

“We are proud to be celebrating 20 years of Shining Light awards, this is a milestone in the journey that truly symbolise the De Beers Group of Companies’ commitment to communities. It’s crucial for young people to receive a helping hand in this industry and these awards serve as a great platform to express their creativity and launch their careers in the industry,” she said.

Barend Petersen, chairman of De Beers Consolidated Mines added, “Beneficiation is one of the key fundamentals of the De Beers Group of Companies, these awards serve as a reminder to our communities and partners that we are committed to developing the youth and providing a platform on an international stage.”

Pat Dambe, vice president Corporate Affairs and Government Relations, De Beers Global Sightholder Sales, said the awards have grown significantly and in the last eight years Botswana and Namibia have seen themselves become participants. He added,”Previous winners have had the opportunity to spend time in Milan at one of the De Beers jewellery design centres, Forevermark INC, working with the finest trade artisans in the world.”
