MMC visits Midrand informal businesses

MIDRAND – Economic Development MMC visits local informal traders.

MMC for Economic Development Sharon Peetz, conducted a tour in Kopanong and Ivory Park on 7 March to look at economic activities in the area with the potential to grow, to contribute to the economy of the province.

Peetz visited Riversands Incubation Hub, Kopanong Linear Market, the Swazi Inn informal trading area in Ivory Park and Kopanong Industrial Market. She said the City was currently experiencing high expenditure and low revenue and she felt she needed to visit the places where trading is taking place organically, so as to provide them with an environment that would enable them to grow.

“If we provide them with power, water, sanitation and infrastructure – give them an environment to grow – then they can pay revenue to the City. The aim is to grow the gross domestic product to five per cent and bring unemployment down,” she said.

Peetz said this is the first region she has visited and will go to other regions for an oversight visit to look at their economic activities and how informal traders can be formalised to contribute to the revenue of the City.
