Gloves are off in the clean-up campaign to fight waste in Midrand on Youth Day

MIDRAND — Residents are invited to a challenge to keep Noordwyk Park clean on 16 June.

To celebrate Youth Day, residents are invited to bring their gloves to fight waste during a clean-up campaign scheduled for 16 June at Noordwyk Park on Kiaat and Liebenberg roads.

This call has been made by non-government organisation Let’s Clean Midrand. One of the founding members of the organisation Esme Bense said the state of many parks in and around Midrand was not desirable.

“For many years the general up-keep of Midrand has been very compromised and this is reflected in the overgrown state of many of our parks and verges, the overflowing dustbins we see on New Road and the general lack of appreciation our citizens have for the environment,” she said.

Bense added that there was a lot of litter, broken bottles, used syringes and other unsavoury bits of litter in the park that children should not have to encounter. “We want to restore Noordwyk Park to becoming the jewel in Midrand’s crown and encourage our youth to keep our areas clean and free of rubbish.”

Ward 112 councillor Madeleine Hicklin said there was potential for great things to be done at the park and she was spearheading the initiative with City Parks. She also appealed to residents to come out in their numbers to support the initiative.

“We are all committed to the upliftment of our youth and community. And maybe the clean-up on Youth Day will be just the spark we need to start the ball rolling in the area,” she said.

The clean-up drive will commence at 9am until 1pm. Residents are encouraged to bring their family members, thick garden gloves and a rake. A jumping castle will be available and staff members of Montessori Primary School will assist in looking after the little children during the clean-up.
