Three suspects are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly robbing a shop in Kaalfontein on 29 June. According to the police, the Diepsloot suspects were allegedly part of a six-man gang who forced their way into the shop and assaulted the Ethiopian national shop owner with the rear-end of a firearm.
“Two of the six-men were allegedly armed. After assaulting the victim, they began ransacking the shop,” said the spokesperson for Ivory Park Police Station, Captain Bernard Matimulane.
The suspects took airtime, cigarettes, clothing and money at the time of the robbery. When police arrived at the scene, after a tip-off, the suspects fled on foot and police only managed to arrest one of them. “The arrested 19-year-old suspect told police that he and his team were from Diepsloot. He was found in possession of a bag full of coins and cigarettes. The Ekurhuleni North Cluster Tracing Unit managed to trace two other suspects who were arrested in Diepsloot,” added Matimulane.
The two suspects aged 24 and 28 were arrested on 30 June. “We have a serious problem of these kinds of crimes and we hope that this arrest by our crime prevention team and the subsequent follow-ups and arrest by the tracing unit will send a clear message that we mean business,” said the Station Commander for Ivory Park police, Brigadier David Ngcobo.
Police are searching for the other three suspects implicated in the case.
