Walk My Jozi
MIDRAND – The aim of the project is to give a voice to local communities and to encourage residents of Johannesburg to walk through their neighbourhoods.
The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) invites proposals to create a #JoziWalks2018 experience in Ivory Park which will take place on 19 and 20 May.
The proposals may be submitted by community champions, heritage specialists, tourism entrepreneurs and anyone who would like to make the Walk My Jozi experience a reality. The aim of the initiative is to give a voice to local communities and to encourage residents of Johannesburg to walk through their neighbourhoods and create conversations about neighbourhood issues.
“After a successful launch in June 2017, where over 300 people took part in free community-led walks in more than a dozen different Joburg neighbourhoods, Walk My Jozi is now back for a second year,” said the agency’s executive manager for planning and strategy, Douglas Cohen.
“Specific neighbourhoods have been identified for this project as these are places in which the JDA has a development project or focus.”
The successful applicant will receive R10 000 sponsorship to plan and implement the walk. Applications open on 9 March and the closing date is on 26 March.
The criteria for the application are:
- The walks should be designed as a route, taking from one to three hours to complete (and held on both days where possible)
- Walks must combine elements of local culture, social history and encounters with people who are part of the local neighbourhood
- The focus must be on communities, places and experiences
- The walk must take place in an area where the JDA has a development presence or focus
- Each walk must be documented. Thereafter, there will be a competition based on the submission of the documented portfolio of the walk. Prizes will be given for first, second and third place.
Application forms may be completed and submitted to Douglas Cohen at dcohen@jda.org.za and Langa Mancunga at langa@lnmentertainment.co.za
