Local police have arrested a man for perjury on 6 July after he misinformed police that his vehicle had been hijacked.
Spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station Sergeant Matome Tlamela said that Sergeant Khomotso Mokhwelepa and Constable Sello Mabula attended to a complaint of a suspicious car parked at a shopping centre parking lot.
“Upon arrival, they found the said vehicle with no occupants and locked,” said Tlamela.
The officers enquired about the vehicle and found that it had been reported as hijacked at the Midrand Police Station and had been parked at the shopping centre since 4 July.Tlamela said that Mokhwelepa tried to contact the owner of the vehicle on his cell phone, but to no avail. She added that another patrol vehicle was sent to his address in Noordwyk and they brought the car owner and his spare key for the car to the centre.
Tlamela said the officers went to the security control room to check the footage of when the hijacked vehicle was parked.”They noticed the same owner [of the vehicle] wearing the same clothes as he was wearing [at the time], parking and leaving the car at 4.50am. He was never seen going back to the car.
“The owner of the vehicle was taken to the police station where he admitted to having parked his car and not being hijacked as he claimed earlier.”
He told the members he hid the original key at home as he was afraid of his wife, since he did not sleep at home the night before the said ‘carjacking’.”Mokhwelepa and Mabula arrested the owner of the vehicle for perjury.
His cell phone and wallet which he claimed were taken, were found in the car.
