Midrand police end Women’s Month with awareness campaign

MIDRAND – Midrand Police along with the Johannesburg Metro Police Department searched 372 people and 112 vehicles while conducting Operation Basadi.

Officers from the Midrand Police Station conducted Operation Basadi on 28 August to commemorate the end of Women’s Month.

The operation highlighted the rise of gender-based violence in the country. Operation Basadi, which means women, was conducted on Allandale and Alsatian roads.

According to the Midrand Police Station spokesperson, Sergeant Matome Tlamela, they were joined by Gauteng Province Traffic Police, and the Johannesburg Metro Police as they were conducting a stop-and-go while also giving out pamphlets on the prevention of gender-based violence.

“As it is Women’s Month … in August, we were creating this awareness to end the month off. The cases are still coming in but not that many, this week only we had two cases of which it was a couple who both got arrested after opening cases.

“Nonetheless, people were happy to see us in the area as we stood with placards against GBV and gave out pamphlets with safety tips for gender-based violence and domestic violence as well as child justice.”

Tlamela added that with their objectives was to trace suspects and distribute pamphlets with tips to prevent gender-based violence. They also issued 11 traffic tickets worth R15 000 and detectives arrested three wanted suspects when conducting tracing as part of Operation Basadi. “About 372 people and 112 vehicles were searched in total.”

Johannesburg Metro Police Departments’ spokesperson, Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, confirmed the amount of tickets issued, saying that they were issued by them and Midrand Police Station officers on the day of the operation.
