New Jerusalem focuses on positives

PRESIDENT PARK – Anna Mojapelo, managing director for the home explained that while the lockdown had its negative effects, there were some positives to take away as well.

New Jerusalem Children’s Home managing director is grateful for the support they have received despite the lack of certain resources.

Managing director for the organisation, Anna Mojapelo, explained that while the lockdown had its negative effects, there were also some positives to take away. Mojapelo said,”As an organisation, we were able to bond more with the children and did most of the therapeutic, remedial work, home schooling and other programmes with the children.

“We had an opportunity to pray unceasingly for South Africa and for the mitigation of Covid-19. The disadvantage was just that the walk-in donors were no longer there.

However, there were those donors whose support towards New Jerusalem is so strong they would call us to come collect donations or deliver to the home as it was an essential service.”

Mojapelo highlighted that their partnership with the Department of Social Development has also been a blessing.

“We are in partnership with [the Department of] Social Development.

They made sure that the children’s needs were given priority. Not forgetting our partnership with some of our special donors, they went the extra mile to make sure that the children’s needs were/are well taken care of.”

Despite the enormous help by the department and loyal donors, Mojapelo added that they still have some needs. “We have our own primary school for our children on-site.

The greatest challenge we face is the need for data and fibre [Internet] connectivity. To have technology in class is the need of the hour.

We also need prescribed books for the children and a social worker’s car.”

Mojapelo concluded that, because of the coronavirus pandemic, there would not be any big events this year.

“We will, however, have our 14th annual general meeting on 31 October with less than 50 people attending.”
