Midrand police monitor Covid compliance

MIDRAND – The police worked with the Department of Environmental Health to check business Covid-19 compliance in the Midrand CBD.

Midrand police partnered with the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Environmental Health in an operation in Midrand central business district recently.

Spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station, Sergeant Matome Tlamela said the police and department were helped by Metro police and local security companies in conducting stop and searches as well as visits to various businesses in the area to check Covid-19 compliance.

She added that the operation resulted in 26 undocumented people being arrested for failure to produce a valid passport.

She said, “Five non-compliance notices were issued by City of Johannesburg’s [Department of] Environmental Health around the CBD.”

Spokesperson for the department, Nthatisi Modingoane said the operation was a result of complaints received by the police from the public regarding Covid-19 non-compliance in businesses in the area such as beauty and hair salons. Modingiane explained, “The operation revealed that indeed there was non-compliance on the premises and spot notices were issued by this department to the owner or person in charge to address the current status of the premises within a given time frame.

Modingiane continued, “Business owners undertaking personal risk activities are expected to be in a possession of a valid health permit in terms of public health bylaws which is issued by this department after receiving an application, and the official from this department is satisfied after conducting the inspection that the premises does comply with all the requirements stipulated in the public health by-laws.”

Modingoane concluded that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, owners of such businesses were expected to put in place measures such as screening, wearing masks and social distancing to curb the spread of the disease.
