New trees on the cards for Berger Street in Vorna Valley
VORNA VALLEY – The residents of Berger Street in Vorna Valley can expect 60 new trees to be planted on their road.
Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe and Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo are pleased to announce the planting of 60 trees along Berger Street in Vorna Valley.
Deppe said she had received a call from a local resident who had apparently been requesting City Parks to plant trees for almost three years. She added, “What we’ve been asking for is trees along this road. A lot of the townhouses in the area are not upgrading themselves. So if we have trees around here it makes the road look better, but also it would be great to have shade in the area.”
Region A manager for City Parks Joseph Ndou said, “This has been a long time coming. The local resident had requested trees along Berger Road for aesthetic reasons and for shade. From our side, we would like the residents in this area to take ownership of the trees, particularly when it comes to looking after the trees.”
He added that the City Parks would plant river bushwillows (combretum erythrophyllum) along the road.
Ndou said, “Planting trees around the city is a major priority to us. We would like to use trees to tackle climate change. Recently, we experienced an extremely hot period in Johannesburg, and usually when it’s hot, people turn on air conditioning in their home which uses a lot of energy. So planting trees would encourage residents to experience the outside while finding shade outside.”
Local non-profit organisation, Nermai has also come on board with the project and will work with City Parks to plant the trees. Member of the organisation Theo Chetty said, “This is a great initiative. It’s something that really pushes to bring the community together.”
