Police send warning on high fraud incidents

HALFWAY HOUSE – Constable Eliot Mabulane said that many residents have reported losing money and property through online sales purchases.

Sending a stern warning to residents, Midrand Police Station has raised concerns over the high number of fraud cases that have taken place recently.

The spokesperson for the station, Constable Eliot Mabulane said since the beginning of the year, many dockets of fraud-related cases have been opened.

“This includes money-related scams through sales transactions and property.

“Suspects will advertise property online and demand half of the value of the said property as a deposit, which then ends up in people falling victim to the scam,” said Mabulane.

He said this has led to victims losing their money and properties due to these scams posted on social media platforms such as Facebook, OLX and others.

“As police, we urge people to not make any transactions to strangers when in desperation mode.

“Many victims will be longing to buy a vehicle and end up paying for a car they have not seen before buying.”

Mabulane suggested that a safer way to purchase items online was to ask the seller to meet with them for the collection of purchases.

“We advise that people arrange to meet up at a safe place such as a police station.

“In the meantime, the Midrand task team is on an operation to address and trace such criminals.”
