Residents’ association wants their own health facility
GLEN AUSTIN – The Glen Austin residents travel as far as Noordwyk and Halfway House to access health services.

The 2022 Glen Austin Residents Association (Gara) committee says it hopes to build a health facility by the end of their tenure.
The association’s chairperson, John Mphatsoe, says the area does not have a clinic and recreational facilities such as sports grounds despite having enough land for those developments.
“We can’t be going to Halfway House to access clinic and it is unfair that we have to travel that far. At some point we go as far as Noordwyk and honestly speaking, people can’t be travelling such a long distance to access services. We need a clinic and sports grounds for recreational,” said Mphatsoe.

Mphatsoe was elected the association’s chair for his second term on February 26 at the annual general meeting held in Ambrosia Hall in Glen Austin.
The Gara committee consists of five positions with Mphatsoe as the chairman and assisted by Martin Dohm as a vice-chairperson.
Rochelle Luus was elected as secretary, Robert Southey as treasurer and Lizl Snyman as a non-executive member.
Asked if there was a petition waiting to be signed by the community members for the development of the clinic, Mphatsoe said they were still talking to the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Health and Social Development.

Mphatsoe said he will continue working hard to ensure that the association grows bigger.
“I think being elected again unopposed means one is doing very well. The challenge is with us [committee] now to make sure that we work closely with our community and work hard to develop our area. We must serve our people.”
Among other services that the Gara committee administrators hope to achieve is to get tarred roads and street lights for the community.
