Midrand teenage girls get football league after 16 years
MIDRAND — The official league games will commence on March 19 at the Rabie Ridge Stadium where 13 teams will battle for the R10 000 prize money
For the first time since Midrand Local Football Association (MLFA) was established 16 years ago, teenage girls will take to the field to kick-start their football journey in a professional league structure.
In a bid to fight teenage pregnancy and get young girls off the streets, the association launched the U17 women’s league on March 12.

The official league games will commence on March 19 at Rabie Ridge Stadium where 13 teams will battle for the R10 000 prize money.
Head of the women’s football committee at the association Siyabulela Loyilane said, “This is groundbreaking for us as MLFA. Since our establishment in 2006, this is something we have been trying to do. I am happy we have worked hard and pushed in the last three months since I came in as head of women’s football here and this is a positive result of our hard work.”
Loyilane has been part of football development for years and won the 2020 Momentum gsport Awards’ Volunteer of the Year.
“We hope this platform [league] will also attract the junior national team coaches for scouting purposes and exposure. We want to ensure that they [players] don’t only play for fun but they also find their true potential and ply their trade in the biggest women’s league nationally or internationally.”
All participating players will receive sanitary towels when the league starts.
