New R55 robots to curb accidents and need for CCTV to fight crime

“Estimated cost per pole infrastructure will be R4 500 which will be multiplied by 14 poles to give us R63 000 per month on a 36-month contract,” said Thobejane.

Midrand Sector 3 Crime Forum believes the newly installed robots at key intersections in the area will reduce accidents and save lives at these road crossings.

This after the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport installed robots at the intersections of African View Drive and the R55, and Plantation and Olifantsfontein (R562) roads in Noordwyk.

Chairperson of the forum Marvin Maphiri said they would now shift their focus on getting street lights and street cameras installed at crime hotspots in the area.
“This [installation of robots] will save us in terms of operational costs because we don’t have to go out to redirect traffic at these two intersections every now and again. However, our next project to focus on now is to have 14 poles in different hotspot areas that we have identified, with automatic number plate recognition [cameras] installed,” said Maphiri.

He said after publicly advertising for an accredited security company to install and monitor these cameras, only Midrand-based Thorburn Security Solutions applied and was ultimately given the contract.

Business development manager Philadi Thobejane of Thorburn said the security company was part of the community and they were keen to be active in the area to fight crime.

“Estimated cost per pole infrastructure will be R4 500 which will be multiplied by 14 poles to give us R63 000 per month on a 36-month contract. After installation, the monitoring and running of cameras will be free of charge by Thorburn,” said Thobejane.
