Fire takes Mothibi’s home for the second time
In July 2019, an inquest was opened by Midrand police after the first fire ravaged the Mothibis' house.
There are still investigations underway by Midrand police into the cause of the fire that engulfed a house in President Park.
On her return trip from Limpopo on June 5, President Park resident Annikie Mothibi received a phone call from her daughter informing her that their home has caught fire.
Mothibi told Midrand Reporter that her 15-year-old daughter called her while panicking, and by that time, the neighbours, Midrand police, the Community Policing Forum and members of Tactical Firefighting Operations were on-site fighting the fire.
This is the second fire to strike the home. In July 2019, an inquest was opened by Midrand police after the first fire ravaged the Mothibis’ house.
“I do not know what caused the fire and nor does my daughter,” said Mothibi.” There was no electricity cable fault where the fire started.”
It is alleged that the fire started in the backrooms while her daughter was outside playing. Everything – from the backrooms to the main house – was burnt and the damage is estimated at R200 000, according to Mothibi.

“Everything is destroyed, including school uniforms. The things that were destroyed were donated to me after the first fire in 2019,” added Mothibi with tears in her eyes.
Midrand police spokesperson Constable Eliot Mabulane confirmed that the station received a complaint from a resident in Modderfontein Road in President Park alleging the house was on fire.
“The complainant mentioned to the police that the incident happened when she was not at home and upon her arrival, she found the house and property burnt. No suspects have been identified and the motive behind the crime is unknown.”
A docket of arson has been opened by the Midand police for further investigation.
