Community hero calls for ubuntu

Maduray says, "We need to get back to Ubuntu, then we as a community can have the driving force to eliminate crime in our area."

Bravery and passion are cherished attributes of any community hero, some develop these over time while others have them pumping through their veins.
One individual who encompasses this is Danny Maduray.

Maduray has lived in the Midrand community for more than 20 years. Originally from KwaZulu-Natal, he has done more than make this community his home. Maduray said his passion for his neighbour’s safety came from his late father’s want to help people. “He always assisted the disadvantaged or poor people in KZN, so I guess it’s in my blood,” Maduray said of his father.

Aside from being the CEO of Ria Sebetsa Security Services, everyone in Midrand knows ‘Danny’. He is valued for his love and compassion for people.

It is a wonder how he finds the time in between paying the school fees and organising bursaries for local children and young adults. He also runs multiple charity initiatives. Notably, in 2018, in honour of a woman who had committed suicide after she was reportedly raped, he and his wife Michelle hosted free self-defence classes for women. Last year, in light of the latest crime statistics and to help children and women better protect themselves, the team taught locals basic but important skills to defend themselves.

“Being a victim of crime myself and going through the traumatic emotions thereafter, [it] pushed me to create a safer environment for our communities. I have a passion to fight crime in the community where I live and work in. My passion is for people to be safe always, for our children to have a safer place to play in.”
When discussing issues that Midrand faced, Maduray said there was no sense of ‘togetherness’ in the community. “We need to get back to ubuntu, then we, as a community, can have the driving force to eliminate crime in our area.” He was also a driving force behind getting Vumacams (security cameras) installed or as he put it, ‘God’s Window’.
“This enables rapid tracking and response when it comes to kidnapping, hijacking, accidents, and follow home from the bank robberies.” Asked what made a person ‘bold and brave’, he said, “By exposing crime, by blowing a whistle to our 24/7 control room or to the South African Police Services.”

Showing his funny side, Maduray looked back at an amusing moment in all the chaos. “This is hilarious, our 24-hour control room received a distress call stating that robbers were on their [client’s] roof. We sent out our tactical teams only to discover that there were ‘tsotsi rats’ in the ceiling.”

Danny offers these security tips:

  • Ensure your alarm system is in working condition.
  • Install additional backup batteries for your alarm system as we prepare for load-shedding.
  • Be warned of criminals impersonating police on the road.
  • Avoid withdrawing cash from ATMs, rather go into the bank or into a grocery store that offers cash withdrawals.
  • Theft out of the motor vehicle – Do not leave valuables in your motor vehicle as criminals are constantly remotely jamming your vehicles, rather pull on your door handles to ensure the vehicle is locked.
  • When going out to the shops to conduct shopping, do not carry cash but rather use your bank cards.
  • As much as possible leave minors at home when shopping, this will help in preventing child kidnapping.
  • When travelling on the road, be courteous, follow safe following distances, and do not drink and drive.
  • Most importantly, be vigilant always.
